war, for real

You know how we're at war? Tonight, at 7:01 I talked to my friend from high school who was getting on his plane to ship out. He was saying goodbye right as his plane was boarding. Six months over "there"....back for six or so months...and then back for probably another year. Why does it still seem like it's fake?

my quick thought...we've never been asked to sacrifice, this war is not real to us. This has made it very easy, by the way, to pacify the country. A little conspiritorial? Perhaps, but interesting none the less.

and if asked to sacrifice, what exactly could/would we sacrifice? As far as I know, the President could ask for men to volunteer to fight (probably should, though obviously politically dubious), but short of that, there is not much else civilians could do. Rationing as in WWII would be pointless, no need for it. Even for the hundreds of billions of dollars already spent, very few in america have felt in their pocketbooks...And far from pacifying the country, I think that it has made us indifferent more than anything to the outcome. Hardly conspiritorial...

Hey Ben,

Good thoughts. I agree that we're indifferent, that's exactly what Bush wants from us. Pacification leads to indifference. Bush has stated himself that he wants Americans to go about their daily lives as if nothing is happening. If the war were made more real to us then there would be a bigger outcry against it.

I'm sad that people have and continue to die in a war that could have been prevented.
